Rev-oil-utionary Skincare – Boost your skincare with oils
by Lisa Young – Salon Director
Oil !! It conjures up images of a greasy complexion, spots and blackheads but now it’s making waves in the skincare industry !
Before you go yuk ! keep your mind open to the opportunities that these oils can offer.
It’s actually quite a clever skin care ingredient if used correctly.
Coconut oil is the latest must have ingredient and before that we had Argan Oil and Macadamia Oil.
So what’s it all about and how can these oils be beneficial to your skin?
Read on for more about this previously misunderstood ingredient.
Oils to Cleanse the Skin
Believe it or not, oils are much more efficient at cleansing. Applied to dry skin they penetrate much deeper into the skin to melt through the layers of debris. Then by adding a splash of water they mix with the natural oil on your skin to create a milky emulsion, which immediately encapsulates and lifts the dirt and debris out of the skin and away.
The reason why is because oil is resistant to water. It just propels dirt and debris off the skin so you get a much more effective cleanse by applying a cleansing oil based product to the skin first.
Dermalogica skin care follows a “double cleanse” method to cleanse your skin. Firstly with an oil and then following up with a surfactant based cleanser specifically for your skin type.
The great thing about this method is that the cleanse is tailored specifically to the skin type. So regardless of whether you are oily or dry, your first cleanse always starts with Dermalogica Precleanse.
Dermalogica Pre Cleanse Oil contains a rich blend of:
- Olive oil & Apricot Kernel to soothe and moisturise.
- Kukui Nut, which is enriched with vitamins A,C & E as well as Omega 3 fatty acids.
- Borage Seed that contains Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA) to treat dehydration, scaliness, inflammation and eczema.
This means that by using this cleansing oil you get a much more efficient cleanse. It’s remarkable what a difference a week of double cleansing can make to even the most congested skin just by using an oil to cleanse !
So why not give it a try ?
After all you wouldn’t think twice about washing your hair with 2 applications of shampoo. So why shouldn’t you do the same for your face and use 2 cleansers ?
Facial oils to combat Skin aging
Oils are not just reserved for general skin health, but can also offer a wealth of benefits for mature skin in the fight against skin aging.
Take for example Dermalogica Overnight Repair Serum that contains a perfect blend of anti-oxidants and anti-aging ingredients such as:
- Argan Oil – for skin penetration without the feeling of greasiness.
- Rosehip Seed Oil & Rose oil – rich in antioxidants and an excellent source of Vitamin C as well as essential fatty acids.
- Sunflower Seed Oil – an excellent source of ceramides.
- Carrot seed Oil – a nourishing antioxidant rich oil that helps to rejuvenate skin.
- Jasmine Oil – to condition and soothe dry distressed skin.
All these oils combined with Brown Edible Seaweed as well as Palmitoyl Tripeptide, which stimulate collagen and Hyaluronic synthesis to strengthen the skin and reduce the signs of ageing.
This wonderfully synchronises night-time circadian rhythms to enhance skin nourishment and recovery as well as cell renewal and hydration … And it smells amazing making it the perfect night time routine and finish to the day !
How to apply Facial Oils
Facial Oils are best applied at night before you go to bed. This is because it is at night time that your skin’s function changes from “protect” to “regenerate and repair”, which means that your skin will natural absorb the nutrients that the oils has to offer and therefore benefit the skin better during the night. At night time your skin regenerates 3 times faster than during the day, which means it makes this a perfect time to bump up the skin care.
If you suffer from dryer skin, oils can be used during the day as well but don’t forget to apply at night as well.
Whether you apply day or night, give your skin an extra hydration boost by spritzing the skin with an alcohol free toner such as Dermalogica Multi Active Toner before applying the oil. This ensures that an additional boost of hydration is locked inside the skin as you apply the oil, which plumps out fine lines and wrinkles.
Multi-purpose Skincare Oils
Some oils are not just limited to use on the face but are also great for use on the body. Dermalogica Stress Relief Oil is a multi-functional oil and is perfect for use in the bath, for massage and also deluxe skin conditioning.
It’s a perfect blend of skin smoothing advanced silicones to smooth the skin as well as aromatherapy essential oils used:
To Soothe & Calm:
- Sandalwood.
- Lavender.
- Orange.
- Clary Sage.
To naturally purify and counteract the negative effects of stress:
- Tea Tree.
- Lemon.
- Ylang-Ylang.
You can even blend stress relief oil into a body cream to intensify hydration whilst providing the aromatherapy benefits.
