How Does Microdermabrasion Work ?
Our skin consists of multiple layers of skin cells. The newer skin cells exist deep down in the lower layers of the skin and these gradually work their way up to the surface of the skin. As they do so they age, die and naturally shed via a process called desquamation. This contributes to the dust in your house for example!
Ageing slows down this process. For example, at 20 years old the cell renewal cycle is approximately 20 days, whereas with a mature person of 60, the cycle takes 60 days. This is why your skin looks duller, more sallow and needs a little extra help. Enter the trusty microdermabrasion treatment.
Microdermabrasion is a professional cosmetic procedure that mechanically buffs the stratum corneum or outer layer of the skin. This removes the dead skin cells revealing the younger more youthful skin cells underneath. This results in a more rejuvenated and hydrated appearance to the skin as well as improving the skins hydration, collagen and elastin levels. It also helps reduce pigmentation so that the skin appears brighter and more refreshed.
There are 2 types of Microdermabrasion techniques both of which are mildly abrasive on the skin:
1) Crystal Microdermabrasion
This method has been used in the beauty industry for many years. It uses aluminium oxide crystals in order to remove the dead skin cells. Any dead skins cells and crystals are vacuum suctioned away revealing younger, brighter more rejuvenated skin.
2) Diamond Microdermabrasion or Diamond Peeling
This method is crystal free. It uses a specially designed diamond tipped wand. The diamonds are made from carbon, the hardest substance known to man. With this method, the wand is applied directly to the skin to lightly abrade the skin and remove the dead skin cells.
With treatments such as CACI and Geneo+ the diamond microdermabrasion technique uses a hygienic disposable tip that is used on 1 client only and is then disposed of. The great thing about diamond microdermabrasion or diamond peeling is that the speed and therefore the treatment can be adjusted to suit the individuals skin sensitivity. This makes it a more flexible and adaptable treatment for all skin types, including those that suffer from rosacea and other skin sensitivity problems.
Regardless of what technique is used, both methods result in an increased stimulation of the deeper layers of the skin. This in turn stimulates fibroblasts activity by increasing the blood supply to the tissues, which creates increased collagen and elastin levels in the client’s skin tissue.
