Combat Anti-Aging signs naturally with our Hints and Tips
If your skin is not looking like it did in your younger years, here are a few hints and tips to help boost your skin naturally.
Did you know that collagen, elasticity and hydration are the key essential requirements for a smooth, healthy skin? As your skin matures, the skin’s natural collagen and elasticity diminishes and as a result, the skin loses its natural plumpness causing fine lines and wrinkles to appear.
As skin loses its elasticity, the body and face loses its firm contours. This is why your face loses its natural youthful heart shape and becomes squarer around the jaw line and neck.
We all dread it, but there are a few things you can do to retain what you’ve got naturally, re-boost your natural collagen and elasticity levels and keep your skin looking younger and more rejuvenated.
1) Get a Great Skincare Routine
A good regular skincare routine is a must for any age and ensures that your skin is functioning as it should be. It’s never too early to start a skincare regime and the earlier you start the better. A good basic routine should include cleanser, moisturiser, sun protection and eye cream. If you are really into your skincare or as you become more comfortable with your routine you can add more complex products for ultimate results.
2) Use products containing Vitamins A, C & E and Antioxidants
a) Antioxidants such as Vitamin C (ascorbic acid or ascorbyl glucosamine) and Retinoids/Retinol (synthetic forms of vitamin A) are both antioxidants and help to speed up your skin’s cell turn over and ability to produce new healthier skin cells. As a result, these reduce the appearance of age spots, boost collagen and diminish fine lines. Evidence suggests that a good topical antioxidant reduces the damaging effects of UV rays even through sunscreen.
b) Vitamin E (alpha or beta tocopherol) can decrease sun damage and improve skin texture.
c) Amino Peptides – are the newest anti-aging ingredient. Peptides are chains of amino acids that are the building blocks of proteins in the skin. When peptides form a long chain of amino acids, they become proteins. A short chain of amino acids is able to penetrate the top layer of our skin and send signals to our cells to let them know how to function. These are becoming increasingly popular in today’s skin treatments.
d) Caffeine – addresses redness and puffiness by restricting the capillaries.
e) Silicones – helps with anti-aging by smoothing into the skin to reduce the appearance of fine lines.

3) Introduce exfoliation into your Skincare Routine
Exfoliation at home is the key to healthy, rejuvenated skin for all types of skin. By gently buffing and removing the dead skin cells the younger more rejuvenated skin cells are revealed and in turn cell renewal (or the skin’s natural shedding cycle) is stimulated. As a result skin looks brighter, hydrated and more rejuvenated. We love Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant as a good all round exfoliant for all skins including sensitive skins. Speak to your skincare therapist at Studio 8 and they’ll be happy to advise you on the best products for your skin.
If you are already exfoliating at home and ready for some advanced exfoliation, why not try a Professional advanced exfoliation treatment such as a skin peel or microdermabrasion. These kinds of exfoliation blast the fibroblasts in the skin that are responsible for forming the extracellular matrix and collagen in the skin and play an important role in tissue repair.

4) Protect
Photo aging is often the first sign that your skin has been damaged. Repeated exposure can also lead to skin cancer. Excessive exposure to UVA and UVB rays can prematurely age your skin. Skin should be protected all year round in order to prevent harmful UV Rays damaging the dermis and, in turn, damaging your natural collagen. As Dermalogica Therapists we recommend a minimal of SPF 30 all year round.
5) Eat a Healthy balanced diet
Skin needs regular fresh supplies of oxygen and nutrients and a poor diet can really take a toll on your skin. Ensure that your diet is balanced and includes plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables especially those that are naturally high in antioxidants. Fad diets often deprive the body and skin of the nutrients it needs to function correctly. In addition, extreme low fat diets can impair your skins natural barrier function, which leaves it more sensitive especially to some of your anti-aging products.
Diets with beneficial proteins that contain amino acids (e.g. threonine and proline) assist the body to produce collagen. Good sources of these amino acids is milk and meats such as pork, beef and chicken, as well as pulses, nuts, eggs, soya, chickpeas and certain green vegetables such as asparagus. Combine these with vitamin C (found in citrus fruits as well as carrots) and you will have the essential combination for building collagen with an anti-aging diet.
6) Cut down on sugar in your diet
Sugar, when combined with the sun’s UV rays, causes a natural reaction in your skin cells that causes the good MMPs in your body (used as part of the natural healing process) to go into overdrive and munch into your natural collagen.
7) Drink Plenty of Water
Keep the water intake up to keep your skin naturally hydrated. Combined with exfoliation this will help to plump out fine lines and wrinkles.
8) Stop or reduce Smoking
Smoking can not only be detrimental to your general health, but is particularly bad for your skin. Smoking dilutes the amount of oxygen in your blood needed to carry fresh nutrients to your skin. It will also reduce the skin’s ability to make new collagen.
