Facial Masks
by Lisa Young – Salon Director
Facial masks or facial masques as they are also known make your skin beautiful and are the perfect way to replenish your skin. You could say it’s a quick skin fix !
There is a range of facial masks that are perfect for all skin types. It’s just a matter of knowing which one is best for your skin.
As a Dermalogica authorised salon we have plenty of Dermalogica masques to choose from that are designed as powerful problem solvers and these can be used to rescue the skin 2 to 3 times a week.
Dermalogica Masques are intense and powerful and deliver a dramatic boost to skin to:
- Purify
- Hydrate
- Recover
What types of facial masks should I use ?
We just love Dermalogica so we have pulled together an easy guide on which Dermalogica face masques to choose from depending on your skin concern. All the masques are artificial fragrance, colour and paraben free.
For all skin conditions
Just because your skin appears “normal” it doesn’t mean you don’t need to treat it to a masque once or twice a week. Due to the environment that we live and work in as well as our modern lifestyles, central heating, air conditioning, exercise and living generally, our skin becomes dehydrated. In fact regardless of how much water you drink, most people have a level of dehydration to their skin!
Here’s our choice of facial masks as a treat for all skin types:
Skin hydrating masque
A refreshing, moisturising masque consisting of calming botanicals and antioxidants. The Skin Hydrating Masque is perfect for all skin types. It restores moisture, especially to dry, stressed skin. Contained in the masque is cross-linked Hyaluronic Acid, which traps moisture to slowly release hydration.
Key ingredients: Squalene, Aucuparia Fruit Ferment Filtrate, Tomato Seed Oil, Cucumber, Soybean Oil, Tocopherol, Carrot Root Extract & Fructose.
Charcoal rescue masque
One of the fast-acting, easy-to-remove facial masks that rescues tired, lacklustre or dull skin. The magic ingredient, activated Binchotan Charcoal, powerfully adsorbs impurities while Sulphur promotes cell turnover for dramatically brighter skin.
Key ingredients: Kaolin, Bentonite, Sea Silt Extract, Sulphur, Lactic Acid, Niacinamide, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Witch Hazel, Charcoal Powder, Volcanic Ash, Phytic Acid, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus.
If you have Acne and breakout-prone skin
Acne or problem skin can be both sensitive and oily. This means it’s really difficult to know what to put on your skin. You can apply something to absorb all the oils that are causing your breakouts but what do you do about the redness and soreness as a result of your breakouts? Dermalogica masques address both the cause of breakouts and acne. They also cool and soothe the skin and reduce the appearance of problem skin and acne.
Here are 2 masques to try:
Breakout Clearing Cooling Masque
A great masque for reducing the redness associated with breakouts whilst helping to rid your skin of breakouts! A potent yet cooling masque that helps clear breakouts whilst refreshing and soothing the skin.
This masque is normally recommended for teen skin but life doesn’t sit in neat little boxes. So if you are older and your skin is all over oily and with / or has breakouts, this is a great masque for you too. The mil amount of salicylic acid helps to gently exfoliate the skin and help ease the cause of problem skin.
Key ingredients: Salicylic Acid, liquorice, camphor, lavender.
Sebum clearing masque
Sebum Clearing Masque is a super cooling masque that uses oil-absorbing clays to clear and prevent breakouts whilst detoxifying the skin. It also contains salicylic Acid, which naturally exfoliates the skin to clear congestion. A blend of cooling botanicals help purify, refine and eliminate excess oils.
This masque is normally recommended for adult problem skin and adult acne. Generally adult acne is caused by a slowdown of the skins’ natural exfoliation process so oil gets trapped in the skin, stagnates and causes eruptions under the skin. Adult acne is typified by congestion around the lower face. The salicylic in sebum clearing masque is slightly stronger than Breakout Clearing Cooling Masque so it gives more exfoliation to the skin. It also has niacinamide to help to improve the skin’s elasticity, dramatically enhance its barrier function, even out skin tone and generally revive your skin’s healthy tone and texture.
Key Ingredients: Salicylic Acid, Kaolin, Bentonite, Oat Kernel Extract, Bisabolol, Menthol, Niacinamide.
If you have oily skin
Even if you don’t get breakouts an oily skin can still be a pain. If you suffer from an oily T zone half way through the day you will know that it makes your skin shine and make up slide! Using a facial masque a couple of times a week helps to control excess oil.
Skin refining masque
A deep-cleansing clay masque to help purify and refine oily skin. Use all over or exclusively in the T-Zone after cleansing to help purify, lift surface impurities and reduce excess oils with kaolin to minimise the risk of triggering congestion and enlarge pores. This masque has a refreshing and calming formula to refine pores without over-drying for smoother skin texture.
Key ingredients: Kaolin, Bentonite, Safflower Seed Oil, Grapefruit Fruit Extract, Tea Tree, Ginger Root Extract, Menthol.
If your skin is mature or prematurely-aging skin
It’s never too early to start on anti-ageing skin care using facial masks and the earlier you start the better your skin will be in later years. As well as lifestyle choices such as protecting your skin with a suitable SPF in the sun, avoiding rapid weight loss in favour of gradual, reducing smoking and drinking along with the use of some savvy skincare products, can aid your skin from premature ageing. Facial masks are a treatment room favourite, even for sensitive skins where we mix professional colloidal oatmeal to create a super hydrating and calming masque for almost any skin type.
Multivitamin power recovery masque
An ultra-replenishing, antioxidant rich masque that helps rescue stressed, aging skin. Use as a revitalising remedy for dulling, dry, dehydrated, lacklustre, photo damaged skin. Botanicals help soothe and calm stressed skin while vitamins A, C and E help repair damaged, aging skin.
Key ingredients: Algae Extract, Tocopherol Acetate, Orbignya Oleifera Seed Oil & Avocado Oil, Matricaria Flower Extract, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract, Grape Seed Extract, Lemon Peel Extract, Liquorice, Lactic Acid, Retinyl Palmitate, Ascorbyl Palmitate.
Masque Mapping – Everyone’s doing it!
Not everyone’s skin is text book and fits anyone one skin type, so why not masque map? For example if you have excess oiliness in your T zone yet across your cheeks is dry, you could apply Sebum Clearing Masque across the T zone and Skin Hydrating Masque across your cheeks and lower face.
Don’t Forget To Masque Your Hands
Give your hands a special treat by exfoliating first and then a spritz of Multi Active Toner followed by a generous application of Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque. Pop a pair of plastic bags or even cling film over your hands and finally keep them warm and toasty wrapped in a towel or even submerged into a bowl of warm water. The warmth helps the masque to penetrate deep into the skin.
